We may have seen the last of summer on Whidbey Island.

This was the view this afternoon at Ebey’s Landing.

I had taken Hill Road across the prairie, followed its twists and turns through a forest, and came upon this view.

The sea was indeed gray, its surface agitated. And the air was fall-cool and getting cooler.

Hill Road is a delightful little side tour of prairie, forest, driftwood beach, and back to prairie.

The MapQuest below is centered on the town of Coupeville. If you magnify the view, you’ll see Highway 20, and its intersection with Main Street.

Follow Main Street to the south. It quickly morphs into Engle Road, but no matter — it’s the same road.

At Hill Road, turn right. Hill Road will take you across fields of grain, through doug-fir forests, and down to the beach.

At the edge of the forest at the beach, you may see a bald eagle. The beach is also a whale-watching viewpoint.

If you continue along Hill Road, you’ll follow its one hairpin turn up the bluff, where the road becomes South Ebey Road.

You’ll come to an intersection with Terry Road. You can turn right and follow Terry Road back to Main Street . . .

. . . or continue on South Ebey Road to Highway 20.
